The city of Agra is said to be the collage of numerous tourist attractions. The alluring beauty of the monuments and the rich presence of color and harmony make it a place to be visited at least once in the life time. But the most important of Agra's tourist attraction is the magnificently built Taj Mahal, the pride of India. There are not many words to describe the eternal beauty of this structure. Taj Mahal, one of the major attractions of Agra, is a tribute to love. Built in the loving memory of Begum Mumtaz Mahal by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the Taj is located in the middle of landscaped gardens on the banks of the river Yamuna. The entire structure has been constructed on a 313 square feet marble platform that stands above a sandstone one. This seventh wonder of the world has its floors and walls adorned with semi-precious stones inlaid into the marble in beautiful patterns called pietra dura.
Agra Fort, close to the garden of the Taj Mahal, one can visit the 16th century Mughal monument, the Red Fort of Agra. Made of pure red sandstone encompasses, spread within 2.5km, constitute many fairytale palaces such as Jahangir Palace and Khas Mahal, built by Shah Jahan; audience hall such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and Sheesh Mahal (The Glass Palace), which, was made with thousands of mirrors was once the harem dressing room. There are also two beautiful mosques including Shah Jahan’s Pearl Mosque. The Octagonal Tower is the place, where Shah Jahan spent the last seven years of his life.
Ram Bagh, is the oldest Mughal garden in India,built by the Emperor Babar in 1528 on the bank of the Yamuna. It lies about 2.34 km north of the Taj Mahal. The pavilion of this garden was made in such a way, so that the wind from the Yamuna, in combination with the greenery, kept it cool even during the peak of summer.
Jama Masjid, built by Jahanara Begum, the favorite daughter of Shah Jahan in 1648. She was also imprisoned with him. The absence of minarets and the shape of the dome offer a distinguished character.
Other places on the Agra sightseeing itinerary include Itmad-Ud-Daulah’s Tomb, Akbar’s Tomb in Sikandra and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. |
